Strength from Within

When we experience things in life whether it is life threatening or not, it seems like it knocks the wind out of us. Sometimes it seems like it takes decades for things to stabilize to the point where they are peaceful.

On a daily basis you say to yourself “I can’t do this anymore, I am tired, I am tired of fighting”, but yet you find yourself making it through another day. Have you ever wondered where that extra fight comes from? Well, we like to call it inner strength. Inner strength is defined as having physical power, moral intellectual power, and the capability of facing challenges head on. Being strong means having access to resources that can help you in your time of need—and using them. Remember being strong does not mean aggression. People with good inner strength believe they have the capability of overcoming a situation by bringing resolution to it, without using aggression. They believe they have the emotional and mental ability to focus on a problem and find plausible solutions. Think about times when you used aggression to resolve a situation, how did you feel afterwards. Did you feel guilty, were you ashamed, or did you beat yourself up? On the other hand, when you resolve situations using your internal strength it allows you to say what needs to be said at the time. It helps to actually resolve the situation and feel like something positive was accomplished.

People rely on their inner strength when facing a variety of stressful situations. Consider the person using their strength to fight through an illness such as breast cancer. This illness wreaks havoc on the body, and we cannot pretend to know what it feels like to go through the process of having a diagnosis of breast cancer. And, the physical and mental strain this diagnosis has on a person is unbelievable. We have heard many survivors say their inner strength is pulled from support from family and friends. Nevertheless, they have the inner strength to keep going, even when they want to give up. This perseverance has unwritten “healing qualities” in keeping the spirits up for the mind and body.
